Atelier MOKU is a Japan-based atelier run by Masayuki & Hideyuki (son & pop), a dynamic duo combining the expertise in modern industrial design and traditional woodcrafting. We have come together to create form out of the nature for the tools of our time.
The idea of Desktop Chair, our first project, came from our own genuine need for something which we feel comfortable putting our laptop on while working on a large screen.
After making two for ourselves, people kept asking us to make the same thing. It was so many that we couldn't keep up with the requests! Making custom-made woodcrafts is something of our speciality, but making them in a batch and delivering to many others is a whole new story...
Luckily, with a help of our partner furniture factory, we managed to develop a way to produce in a fairly large quantity while maintaining the quality. But we still needed funding for production and for setting up a distribution system internationally.
So in July 2011, we decided to put the Desktop Chair's fate into the hands of people and started a project at CAMPFIRE, a leading social funding platform in Japan.
With no guarantee for success, 97 people backed our project and pledged money totaling JPY 477,500, which well exceeded our funding goal and made Desktop Chair a reality. Desktop Chair is a socially funded product, and so is us!
